Pete Merrill’s first commercially available book, ‘The Devil’s Cauldron’ is the memoir of an 8th Army veteran, well worth reading not merely for the light it sheds on the North African campaign against Rommel’s Afrika Korps but for the artilleryman;s perspective on the Birmingham Blitz, drug use (both official and illicit) by the Allied and Axis military, and the growing problems with the Palestinian mandate as World War II neared its conclusion.
